Iodine, Kelp and Your Thyroid: What Men Over 50 Should Know Before Taking a Sea-Based Supplement

The short answer

Adults need about 150 micrograms of iodine a day, and the Tolerable Upper Intake Level is 1,100 micrograms a day. Seaweed based supplements can blow past that ceiling in a single serving. In a 2021 laboratory analysis of 96 commercial macroalgae products, iodine ranged from 5 to 5,600 micrograms per daily dose in supplements, and 54 of the 96 products would have exceeded the European upper limit in one portion.

That matters because a growing number of prostate and "men's vitality" formulas are built on kelp, wakame, nori or bladderwrack. Those ingredients are marketed as sea minerals, but the thing they are richest in is iodine, and too much iodine can trigger either an underactive or an overactive thyroid, especially in older adults and in anyone with existing thyroid disease. Most labels never tell you the iodine dose. Here is what to check before you swallow anything sea derived.

How much iodine you actually need, and where the ceiling sits

Iodine is an essential trace mineral. Your thyroid uses it as the raw material for thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), the hormones that set your metabolic pace. Without enough, the gland cannot produce hormone. With too much, the same gland can misfire in either direction.

The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements sets the Recommended Dietary Allowance for adult men and women at 150 micrograms per day, and the Tolerable Upper Intake Level at 1,100 micrograms per day for adults aged 19 and older.1 That upper limit is not a target, and it is not a cliff either. It is the highest habitual daily intake from food, water and supplements combined that is unlikely to cause harm in the general population.

Two things make the ceiling easier to hit than most men realize. Iodized salt, dairy, eggs and seafood already contribute meaningful amounts in a typical American diet, so a supplement stacks on top of a base you are not measuring. And the American Thyroid Association sets a stricter practical line for supplements specifically, advising "against the ingestion of iodine and kelp supplements containing in excess of 500 mcg iodine daily for children and adults." The ATA also warns that "many iodine, potassium iodide, and kelp supplements contain iodine in amounts that are up to several thousand times higher than the daily Tolerable Upper Limits for iodine."2

How much iodine is actually in kelp, bladderwrack and nori

This is the number the marketing never shows you, and there is a good reason: it is wildly inconsistent.

Researchers in Norway collected 96 commercially available macroalgae products and measured iodine by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Published in Food and Nutrition Research in 2021, the results were striking. Iodine per portion in wholefood seaweed products ranged from 128 to 62,400 micrograms. In seaweed containing foods it ranged from 30 to 25,300 micrograms per portion. In dietary supplements it ranged from 5 to 5,600 micrograms per daily dose. For 54 of the 96 products, a single portion or dose would have exceeded the tolerable upper intake level used in the analysis, which was the European figure of 600 micrograms per day for adults.3

Species is the biggest driver. The same study reported mean iodine concentrations of 7,800 micrograms per gram in oarweed, 4,469 in sugar kelp and 2,276 in kombu, against roughly 18 micrograms per gram in nori. That is a spread of more than 400 fold between the top and the bottom of the seaweed aisle.

Read that last column again. Roughly a seventh of a gram of dried oarweed carries the entire adult daily upper limit. Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is another brown seaweed with the same problem: a well documented high iodine content that shifts with harvest site, tidal exposure and season, so two batches of the same botanical can differ substantially.

Why the variability is the real story. A vitamin D tablet contains a purified compound at a measured dose. A kelp capsule contains a harvested organism whose iodine content was determined by the ocean. Unless the manufacturer tests each batch and prints the resulting iodine figure on the label, nobody in the chain actually knows the dose you are taking, including the person selling it.

What excess iodine does to the thyroid

The counterintuitive part is that too much iodine can cause the opposite problems at the same time in different people.

It can push the thyroid down

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases states directly that "eating foods that have large amounts of iodine, such as kelp, dulse, or other kinds of seaweed, may cause or worsen hypothyroidism," and adds that "taking iodine supplements can have the same effect." It also notes that if you have Hashimoto's disease or another autoimmune thyroid disorder, "you may be sensitive to iodine's harmful side effects."4 Hashimoto's is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States, which means a large share of men already on thyroid medication fall into that sensitive group.

It can push the thyroid up

NIDDK's page on hyperthyroidism lists "eating large amounts of food containing iodine, such as kelp" among the causes, explaining that "consuming large amounts of iodine may cause the thyroid to make too much thyroid hormone," and that "seaweed and seaweed based supplements also contain a lot of iodine."5 This is more likely in people who already have thyroid nodules, and NIDDK notes that overactive nodules "are found most often in older adults." Men over 50 are exactly that population.

The effect is measurable even in healthy people

A randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial published in Endocrine Practice in 2003 gave 36 healthy adults with normal thyroid function either placebo, low dose kelp or high dose kelp for four weeks. TSH rose significantly in both the low dose group (p = 0.04) and the high dose group (p = 0.002), and total T3 fell significantly in the high dose group. All values returned to baseline two weeks after kelp was stopped, except TSH in the high dose group. The authors concluded that "short term dietary supplementation with kelp significantly increases both basal and poststimulation TSH," and called for longer studies to determine whether sustained use would cause clinically significant thyroid disease.6

Case reports fill in the individual picture. One described a 60 year old man taking lithium who developed hyperthyroidism after starting a herbal preparation containing Fucus vesiculosus, resolving once the preparation was withdrawn.7 A single case proves nothing on its own, but it shows the pattern clinicians watch for: new supplement, shift in thyroid function, resolution on stopping.

Signs worth paying attention to

NIDDK lists these signs of an overactive thyroid: weight loss despite increased appetite, rapid or irregular heartbeat, nervousness, irritability, trouble sleeping, fatigue, shaky hands, muscle weakness, sweating or trouble tolerating heat, frequent bowel movements, and an enlargement in the neck called a goiter. It specifically warns that "older adults may have different symptoms, such as loss of appetite or withdrawal from people."5

Signs of an underactive thyroid include fatigue, weight gain, trouble tolerating cold, joint and muscle pain, dry skin or dry thinning hair, slowed heart rate and depression.4

Notice the trap. Fatigue, weight gain and low mood are precisely the symptoms men over 50 write off as normal aging, or as the very thing the supplement was supposed to fix. Only a TSH blood test, usually with free T4, can tell you what is actually happening.

Who should be most careful

The ATA states that "infants, the elderly, pregnant and lactating women, and individuals with preexisting thyroid disease are susceptible to adverse effects of excess iodine intake and exposure."2 In practical terms, talk to a doctor before taking any seaweed based supplement if you:

How to read the label on a sea based supplement

Sea derived prostate formulas are the specific place this gets missed, because buyers are focused on the prostate claim and never think about the thyroid at all. What to ask your doctor

You do not need to memorize endocrinology to have a useful five minute conversation. Bring the bottle, or a photo of the Supplement Facts panel, and ask:

  1. Given my history, is any extra iodine a problem for me?
  2. Should we check a baseline TSH before I start, and recheck it in six to twelve weeks?
  3. Does this interact with anything I already take?
  4. What symptoms should make me stop and call you?

To be fair to seaweed. None of this makes seaweed dangerous. Iodine deficiency is a real problem globally and seaweed is a legitimate food eaten daily in several countries. The issue is not the plant, it is the dose, the variability, and the fact that a concentrated capsule removes the natural brakes that come with eating food. A sheet of nori in a sushi roll and a daily kelp extract capsule are not the same exposure.

Underactive thyroid signs include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, joint and muscle pain, dry skin, slowed heart rate and depression. NIDDK notes older adults may instead show loss of appetite or withdrawal from other people. A blood test is the only way to confirm.

Can I take a kelp supplement if I am on levothyroxine?

Ask your prescriber before you do. Most hypothyroidism in the United States is caused by Hashimoto's disease, and NIDDK states that people with Hashimoto's or other autoimmune thyroid disorders may be sensitive to iodine's harmful side effects, and that iodine supplements may cause or worsen hypothyroidism. If your thyroid function shifts, the dose you are stabilized on may no longer be the right one, which is something only your doctor and a blood test can sort out.

Does a supplement label have to state how much iodine it contains?

Not in a way that is always useful to you. When kelp or bladderwrack is listed as a botanical by weight, that number is the weight of the seaweed, not the iodine it delivers, and the iodine content of the raw material varies by species, harvest site and season. FDA rules at 21 CFR 101.36 also allow ingredients to be grouped as a Proprietary Blend with only the total blend weight declared, so an individual ingredient amount can stay undisclosed. How long does it take thyroid levels to recover after stopping kelp?

In the 2003 randomized trial of 36 healthy adults, four weeks of kelp supplementation significantly raised TSH, and all thyroid laboratory values returned to baseline two weeks after stopping, except TSH in the high dose group. That was a short study in people with normal thyroid function, so it is not a recovery timeline for anyone with thyroid disease. Any decision to stop or continue should be made with your doctor, ideally with blood work before and after.
