Prostadine Ingredients: All 9 Explained, With the Human Evidence Behind Each One

Prostadine contains nine ingredients: nori yaki extract powder, wakame extract, kelp powder, bladderwrack powder, saw palmetto, pomegranate extract, iodine, shilajit and neem. Four of the nine are seaweeds, and iodine is added as a tenth source of iodine on top of them. The product is a liquid, taken as two full droppers (about 2 mL) once a day, and the label prints no milligram amount for any single ingredient and no total iodine figure.
On the evidence: only one of the nine, saw palmetto, has large human trials for urinary symptoms, and those trials were negative. Pomegranate has human trials in prostate cancer patients, not in men with an enlarged prostate. The four seaweeds, shilajit and neem have no human trial for prostate or urinary symptoms that we could find; their support is laboratory, animal or unrelated to the prostate. Ingredient by ingredient: what it is, what is claimed, what is proven
1. Nori yaki extract powder
What it is. Nori is the red seaweed (Porphyra species) pressed into the sheets that wrap sushi. "Yaki" is Japanese for toasted. It is an ordinary food in Japan, Korea and China.
What the manufacturer says. The official page presents nori as a mineral rich seaweed that supports normal prostate function and urinary flow.
What the research shows. We searched for any human trial of nori, in any form, with a prostate or urinary outcome, and found none. Nori's iodine content is the lowest among the seaweeds in this formula: a 2004 analysis in Thyroid measured nori at about 16 mcg of iodine per gram of dry weight, and 2024 analyses reported 5 mcg/g and 16 mcg/g.7,8,9 Red seaweeds are consistently lower in iodine than brown seaweeds such as kelp and wakame.9
Dose and safety. No amount is stated. As a food, nori is safe for most people; the concern is cumulative iodine, covered below.
2. Wakame extract
What it is. Wakame (Undaria pinnatifida) is the brown seaweed in miso soup and seaweed salad. Extracts are usually sold for their fucoidan, a sulfated carbohydrate found in the cell walls of brown seaweeds.
What the manufacturer says. Wakame is described as an antioxidant that helps maintain bladder function and normal urinary flow.
What the research shows. Fucoidan has a real laboratory literature. A 2015 review in Marine Drugs describes studies where fucoidan slowed growth or triggered cell death in cancer cell lines, including a prostate cancer line, but the same review is blunt that "despite numerous promising pre-clinical reports, there are few reported clinical studies so far," and the one cancer trial it identifies was in colorectal cancer alongside chemotherapy.6 Memorial Sloan Kettering's summary lists small human studies of fucoidan for blood pressure, vaccine response and chemotherapy tolerance, none of them for prostate or urinary symptoms.10 So the honest status is: interesting in a dish, untested in men with an enlarged prostate.
Dose and safety. No amount is stated. Fucoidan has anticoagulant properties, and Memorial Sloan Kettering advises anyone on a blood thinner such as warfarin to talk to a healthcare provider because fucoidan may increase bleeding risk.10 Wakame also carries iodine, with analyses reporting roughly 27 to 160 mcg per gram of dry weight.8,9
3. Kelp powder
What it is. Kelp is the umbrella name for large brown seaweeds in the order Laminariales, including kombu. It is one of the most iodine dense foods on earth.
What the manufacturer says. Kelp is presented as a nutrient dense seaweed that helps keep the system "toxin free" and supports prostate and urinary health.
What the research shows. We found no human trial of kelp for prostate or urinary outcomes. What is well documented is kelp's iodine. The 2004 Thyroid analysis found up to 8,165 mcg of iodine per gram in processed kelp granules, with iodine varying by species, harvest and even the age of the blade.7 A 2024 analysis of commercial products in Foods measured a kelp sample at about 6,570 mg/kg, which is the same as 6,570 mcg per gram, and reported that a 5 gram portion of several kelp and kombu products exceeded the tolerable upper intake level for iodine many times over.8 The NIH LiverTox database notes that kelp "can also take up other metals and minerals from the ocean such as calcium, iron, mercury, lead, cadmium and even arsenic," and that using kelp as a major food source "can lead to thyroid abnormalities and even metal poisoning."11
Dose and safety. No amount is stated. This single ingredient could, depending on how much is in the bottle, dominate the iodine content of the whole formula. A 2007 letter in Environmental Health Perspectives discussed a woman whose hair loss, memory loss and fatigue were attributed to arsenic in a kelp supplement she was taking at above the labeled dose, and testing of nine kelp supplements found arsenic in all of them, though largely in the less toxic organic form.12 We cover this in depth in our article on kelp supplements and thyroid function.
4. Bladderwrack powder
What it is. Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is another brown seaweed, from the North Atlantic and Baltic coasts. Its historical use was as a thyroid remedy, precisely because of its iodine.
What the manufacturer says. Bladderwrack is described as supporting healthy prostate cells and urinary function.
What the research shows. Memorial Sloan Kettering's monograph states that "claims of benefit with use of bladder wrack have not been confirmed in clinical studies" and that human data are "quite limited."13 We found nothing on prostate or urinary outcomes.
Dose and safety. No amount is stated. Memorial Sloan Kettering warns that bladderwrack harvested from polluted waters "may cause kidney toxicity due to the presence of heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, and mercury," reports a case of hemorrhagic cystitis in a woman taking a multi-herb product containing it, and notes possible effects on drug metabolizing enzymes.13 And, once again, iodine.
5. Saw palmetto
What it is. The berry of a palm native to the southeastern United States. The studied form is a fat soluble (lipidosterolic) extract standardized to fatty acids and sterols.
What the manufacturer says. Saw palmetto is presented as supporting kidney function and healthy urination. Notably, the official page does not claim a milligram dose.
What the research shows. This is the one ingredient with strong human data, and the data are negative. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health states that saw palmetto "is probably not helpful" for urinary symptoms from an enlarged prostate and that it does not appear to affect PSA readings.1 The 2024 update of the Cochrane review pooled 27 studies with 4,656 participants and concluded that Serenoa repens alone "provides little to no benefits" for lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic enlargement, with high certainty evidence for symptoms and quality of life.2
Dose and safety. Trials used 320 mg per day of standardized extract. Prostadine states no extract amount, no standardization, and delivers everything in about 2 mL of liquid shared with eight other ingredients. A 2013 analysis of 20 saw palmetto products in Nutrients found alcohol based tinctures averaged 46.3 mg of total fatty acids per gram, roughly one twentieth of the 908.5 mg per gram in liquid softgels.3 Our saw palmetto dosage guide walks through the arithmetic. 6. Pomegranate extract
What it is. A concentrate of the fruit's polyphenols, mainly ellagitannins.
What the manufacturer says. Pomegranate is described as an antioxidant that supports healthy blood flow and testosterone levels.
What the research shows. Pomegranate has genuine human trials, but in a different population than the one this product is sold to. In a 2006 phase II study in Clinical Cancer Research, men with rising PSA after surgery or radiation for prostate cancer drank 8 ounces of pomegranate juice daily, and mean PSA doubling time lengthened from 15 months to 54 months. There was no placebo group, and the authors themselves called for a placebo controlled study.4 That study came in 2015: a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial of pomegranate extract in 183 men with rising PSA. Doubling time lengthened in the placebo group too, and "compared with placebo, pomegranate extract did not significantly prolong PSADT."5 Memorial Sloan Kettering's summary reaches the same place: preliminary benefit in early work, no significant PSA reduction versus placebo in a later trial.14 None of this involves urinary symptoms or an enlarged prostate.
Dose and safety. No amount is stated. Memorial Sloan Kettering lists case reports of pomegranate juice interacting with warfarin and a possible increased risk of rhabdomyolysis in patients on statins, both worth raising with a doctor since many men in this age group take one or both.14
7. Iodine
What it is. An essential mineral the thyroid uses to make its hormones. In supplements it is usually potassium iodide or sodium iodide.
What the manufacturer says. Iodine is presented as supporting the urinary tract and prostate.
What the research shows. Iodine's role in thyroid hormone production is settled science; a role in prostate health is not. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheet, which runs to dozens of references on iodine and health, does not describe a prostate use.15 The reason to pay attention to this ingredient is not benefit but arithmetic: it is the fifth iodine source in a nine ingredient formula.
Dose and safety. The adult RDA is 150 mcg per day and the tolerable upper intake level is 1,100 mcg. The NIH notes that high intakes can cause goiter, elevated TSH and hypothyroidism in susceptible people, and that iodine induced hyperthyroidism can also occur.15 The American Thyroid Association advises against iodine and kelp supplements containing more than 500 mcg of iodine daily and names the elderly and anyone with preexisting thyroid disease as the groups most susceptible to harm from excess iodine.16 MedlinePlus adds that very high iodine intake can reduce thyroid function and that combining high dose iodine with antithyroid medicines can have an additive effect.17
8. Shilajit
What it is. A blackish brown exudate collected from high mountain rock, especially in the Himalayas, formed over centuries from decomposed plant matter. It is made mostly of humic substances, with fulvic acid accounting for roughly 60 to 80 percent, plus trace elements.18
What the manufacturer says. Shilajit is presented as an antioxidant that supports healthy sleep and prostate function.
What the research shows. The one randomized, double blind, placebo controlled human trial we could locate, published in Andrologia in 2016, gave 250 mg of purified shilajit twice daily to healthy volunteers aged 45 to 55 for 90 days and reported significantly higher total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS than placebo.19 That is a hormone measurement in healthy men. It is not a prostate outcome, and a 2012 review of shilajit in the International Journal of Alzheimer's Disease notes that it "lacks systematic documentation and well-established clinical trials."18 We found nothing on prostate or urinary symptoms.
Dose and safety. No amount is stated, and the trial dose of 500 mg a day is a substantial share of a 2 mL serving. The safety issue is contamination. The same 2012 review warns that unpurified shilajit carries risks from mycotoxins, heavy metal ions and free radicals, and that Ayurvedic products including shilajit have been found to contain lead, mercury and arsenic.18 A 2025 study in BMC Chemistry measured thallium, a toxic metal, in 13 raw shilajit samples and 5 commercial supplements, and found some supplements contained more thallium than the raw material, which the authors read as a sign of contamination during processing or adulteration.20 Prostadine does not state a purification method or publish third party metal testing.
9. Neem
What it is. A tree native to the Indian subcontinent whose leaves, bark, seeds and oil have thousands of years of use in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine.
What the manufacturer says. Neem is presented as an antioxidant that supports sleep and overall prostate wellness.
What the research shows. The US National Research Council's monograph on neem states that its established uses rest on antiseptic properties for skin conditions and that "cures for many more ailments have been claimed but have not been independently confirmed by trials under controlled conditions."21 Memorial Sloan Kettering says human data are lacking for its purported uses.22 We found no human trial of neem for prostate or urinary symptoms.
Dose and safety. This is the ingredient with the most concerning safety file. The National Research Council reports that neem oil doses "as small as 5 ml have killed infants," advises that consuming the oil "is not recommended," notes anecdotal reports of kidney failure with prolonged leaf consumption, and describes neem leaf extracts as reducing fertility in a variety of male mammals.21 Memorial Sloan Kettering lists vomiting, drowsiness, seizures, brain damage and "severe poisoning in both children and adults" from swallowed neem oil.22 A 2021 toxicology review in Molecules concludes that neem extracts show low acute toxicity in mammals at ordinary oral doses, but identifies the kidneys, liver and testicles as the target organs of neem oil toxicity and reports decreased sperm viability and testosterone in treated rats.23 Prostadine's label does not say which part of the neem plant is used, in what form, or how much. For a product aimed at men, the male fertility signal alone deserves a conversation with a doctor.
The dose question: why the label cannot answer it
Every ingredient section above ends the same way, "no amount is stated," and that is not an oversight on our part. Under the FDA dietary supplement labeling rule at 21 CFR 101.36, a manufacturer may group ingredients into a proprietary blend, declare only the total weight of the blend, and list the components "in descending order of predominance by weight." Individual amounts do not have to appear.24 Prostadine follows that pattern: nine names, one serving size, no milligrams.
What you can do is put a ceiling on the whole thing. A serving is two full droppers, about 2 mL, which is roughly two grams of liquid. Whatever the nine ingredients weigh together, they are dissolved or suspended in that volume along with the water, glycerin or alcohol that makes it a liquid. Compare that to what the research used:
- Saw palmetto: 320 mg per day of a standardized fat soluble extract in every major trial.2
- Pomegranate: 8 ounces (about 240 mL) of juice per day in the 2006 study.4
- Shilajit: 500 mg per day of purified material in the 2016 trial.19
Two of those three would not physically fit in a 2 mL serving even if the other six ingredients were absent, and the third (saw palmetto) would have to be a concentrated extract, which the label does not claim. This is the core of the dose problem, and it is the same one we set out in our full Prostadine review: the formula is legal, the ingredient names are real, and there is still no way to connect the bottle to any published trial.
What "descending order by weight" tells you. If the panel follows the rule, nori yaki comes first because there is more of it than anything else, and neem comes last because there is the least. That means the ingredients with the most evidence (saw palmetto, pomegranate) sit in the middle of the list, and the two with the loudest safety files (shilajit, neem) are at the bottom, presumably in small amounts. It is the one piece of quantitative information the panel gives you, and it is only relative.
The total iodine question
Iodine deserves its own section because the label does not print a per-serving iodine figure and because five of the nine ingredients contribute it: nori, wakame, kelp, bladderwrack and the added elemental iodine.
The reference points, from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements: the adult RDA is 150 mcg per day, the tolerable upper intake level is 1,100 mcg per day, and commercially available seaweeds vary from 16 mcg to 2,984 mcg of iodine per gram, depending on species and processing.15 Other published analyses have measured kelp granules above 8,000 mcg per gram.7 The American Thyroid Association's practical line is 500 mcg per day from supplements.16
What that means in practice: the iodine in a serving of Prostadine could be trivial or it could be substantial, and the label gives you no way to know which. If the kelp and bladderwrack are present in tens of milligrams, the seaweed iodine alone could run to hundreds of micrograms; if they are present in single milligrams, it would be a fraction of that. Add the elemental iodine, whose amount is also unstated, and you have a formula whose most important safety number is missing. Seaweed iodine also varies between harvests, so two bottles from different batches could differ.7
Who this matters for, according to the American Thyroid Association: the elderly, and anyone with preexisting thyroid disease such as Hashimoto's disease, Graves' disease, thyroid nodules or a history of partial thyroidectomy.16 The NIH adds that excess iodine can push a susceptible thyroid in either direction, toward hypothyroidism with goiter or toward iodine induced hyperthyroidism.15 Men over 60 are, by definition, in the first group. If you take levothyroxine or an antithyroid drug, or you have ever been told your TSH was off, show the bottle to the doctor who manages your thyroid before you take it.
What is NOT in Prostadine
A useful way to judge a formula is to notice what it leaves out. Most prostate supplements on a drugstore shelf are built around a different set of ingredients, and several of those have more human evidence for urinary symptoms than anything in Prostadine.
Beta-sitosterol
A plant sterol, usually from pine or the South African star grass. A 1999 systematic review in BJU International pooled four double blind placebo controlled trials in 519 men and found beta-sitosterol improved symptom scores (weighted mean difference of 4.9 points on the International Prostate Symptom Score) and peak urine flow (3.91 mL/s), without reducing prostate size. The reviewers cautioned that trials were short, lasting 4 to 26 weeks, and that long term effectiveness and safety are unknown.25,26 Saw palmetto extract contains some beta-sitosterol, but the trials above used standardized sterol preparations, not saw palmetto.
Pumpkin seed oil
A 2009 randomized, double blind, placebo controlled trial in 47 Korean men with symptomatic BPH compared pumpkin seed oil (320 mg per day), saw palmetto oil, both, or placebo for 12 months, and reported reduced symptom scores by 3 months and improved maximal urine flow by 6 months in the pumpkin seed oil group, with no side effects.27 A 2021 single blind trial in 73 men compared 720 mg per day of pumpkin seed oil with the prescription drug tamsulosin for 3 months; both groups improved, tamsulosin improved more, and the pumpkin group reported no side effects.28 Small trials, but they are trials in the right population with the right outcomes.
Lycopene
The red pigment in tomatoes. A 2008 pilot trial in the Journal of Nutrition randomized 40 men with biopsy proven BPH to 15 mg of lycopene daily or placebo for 6 months. PSA fell in the lycopene group, prostate enlargement progressed in the placebo group but not the lycopene group, and symptom scores improved more with lycopene.29 Forty men and six months is a pilot, not proof, but it is direct evidence.
Pygeum
Bark extract of the African plum tree. A 2000 meta-analysis in the American Journal of Medicine covered 18 randomized trials in 1,562 men and found men taking pygeum were about twice as likely to report symptom improvement, with nocturia reduced by 19 percent and peak flow increased by 23 percent. The authors flagged short studies (mean 64 days) and variable preparations.30 Memorial Sloan Kettering summarizes the same way: several trials show benefit for urinary symptoms, long term effectiveness and safety unknown.31
Zinc
Zinc is in most drugstore prostate formulas because prostate tissue is naturally rich in it. The NIH zinc fact sheet sets the adult male RDA at 11 mg and reviews evidence on immunity, diabetes and other conditions; it does not describe prostate enlargement as an evidence supported use.32 So zinc's absence from Prostadine is not a loss of proven benefit, but it does illustrate how differently this formula is built from the rest of the category.
The pattern is hard to miss. Prostadine is built around seaweeds and iodine, ingredients with no human prostate trials, while the ingredients that do have human prostate trials, imperfect as those trials are, were left out. That is a design choice, and it is the main reason our review of Prostadine lands where it does.
How to read the Supplement Facts panel on the bottle
If you already have a bottle, or you are looking at a photo of one, here is what to check, in order. The whole exercise takes about a minute.
- Serving size. Confirm it reads two droppers or 2 mL, and check how many servings the bottle claims. A 60 mL bottle at 2 mL per day is 30 servings.
- Look for an iodine line with a percent Daily Value. Under the labeling rule, iodine is a nutrient that can be declared with a percent DV. If your panel shows an iodine figure in micrograms, write it down and compare it to 150 mcg (RDA), 500 mcg (ATA supplement ceiling) and 1,100 mcg (upper limit). If it shows no figure, treat the iodine content as unknown and assume the seaweeds add to whatever is there.15,16,24
- Find the blend heading and its total weight. If the ingredients sit under a "proprietary blend" or a branded blend name with a single milligram figure, that figure is the whole blend, not any one ingredient.24
- Read the order. Ingredients in a blend must be listed in descending order by weight. The first ingredient is the most abundant; the last is the least.24
- Check for the word "extract" and a standardization. "Saw palmetto" alone could be berry powder or a tincture. "Saw palmetto extract standardized to 85 to 95 percent fatty acids" is the trial material. Absence of that phrase is itself information.
- Look at the other ingredients line. This tells you the carrier: water, glycerin, alcohol, flavorings. It explains what most of the 2 mL actually is.
- Look for third party testing marks. USP Verified, NSF Contents Certified, or a published certificate of analysis for heavy metals. For a formula containing kelp, bladderwrack and shilajit, a metals test is not a nice to have.11,13,20
- Note the facility statement. "Made in an FDA registered facility" means the facility is registered, as the law requires. It does not mean the FDA reviewed or approved the product; the FDA does not approve dietary supplements.
Bottom line on the ingredient list
Nine real ingredients, honestly named, in amounts you are not told. One has strong human evidence for urinary symptoms and it is negative. One has human evidence in cancer patients that did not hold up against placebo. Seven have no human prostate data at all, and two of those seven, shilajit and neem, carry contamination and toxicity concerns that a careful buyer would want tested and disclosed. Meanwhile, the label does not print the one number, total iodine, that decides whether this formula is safe for a man with a thyroid condition.

Nori is the red seaweed (Porphyra species) used in sushi, and yaki simply means toasted. It is a normal food, not a medicine, and we found no human trial of nori for prostate or urinary symptoms. Among the seaweeds in Prostadine it is the lowest in iodine: laboratory analyses put nori at roughly 5 to 16 mcg of iodine per gram of dry weight, compared with thousands of micrograms per gram for kelp.
What does shilajit do in Prostadine?
Shilajit is a tar like substance collected from Himalayan rock, made mostly of humic substances such as fulvic acid. The only randomized human trial we could find gave 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day to healthy men aged 45 to 55 for 90 days and reported higher total and free testosterone than placebo. It did not measure prostate or urinary outcomes. Unpurified shilajit can carry heavy metals, and a 2025 analysis found thallium in commercial shilajit supplements, so purification and third party testing matter.
Is neem safe to take every day?
Neem leaf extract in small amounts has a long history of use, but the safety picture is not clean. A National Research Council review notes that swallowing neem oil has killed infants at doses as small as 5 mL and advises against consuming the oil. Memorial Sloan Kettering lists severe poisoning in children and adults from swallowed neem oil. Animal studies identify the testicles, liver and kidneys as target organs, and neem reduces fertility in male mammals. Because Prostadine does not state which part of the plant is used or how much, ask a clinician before daily use, especially if you hope to father children.
